Order is restored in international ball! (Sort of.) Here’s what they’re saying out in the ether about the United States 118-107 win over Spain in the gold-medal game on Sunday …
Upside And Motor: "No one really knows at this point whether K will be back, or if it will be Pringles or McMillan stepping up to the plate in 2012. The team will likely look a lot different then (although could you really exclude LeBron, Wade, Howard, Williams, Paul, Bosh, or Anthony? They were all key cogs during this Olympic run, and can only get better in the foreseeable future. But regardless of who laces up and who paces the sidelines, there’s no winning here. Not on this stage, not for this country, and not in this sport. How do you win in a world where there shouldn’t be another option? If you win by just 15, it’s not enough, and if you lose it’s unforgivable, for certain. So if you’re a fan of the "Redeem Team" moniker have no fear — it’s only a matter of time before "REDEEM TEAM II" makes an appearance after the next inevitable defeat. And yet again you’ll have a chance to relive our failures before the ship is hopefully righted."
Britt Robson, The Rake: "Comparisons to Michael Jordan have become hackneyed, not to mention unfair, for NBA players over the past decade — it is like anointing a singer-songwriter the next Dylan or a reggae artist the next Marley. But there is one trait Kobe possesses that involuntarily brings up memories of MJ — an almost maniacal need to be the straw that stirs the drink when the game is on the line. There are other sublime clutch shooters — Manu Ginobili comes to mind. But Ginobili — or Robert Horry, or even LeBron James — won’t engage in a bloodthirsty fight to seize the right to be either hero or goat. (Yes, I know there have been times when Kobe has "disappeared" in big games. But even then, it seemed as if he was ostentatiously proving a point about his value to the team by withdrawing his aggression. Thankfully those days seem to be over.)
FreeDarko: "Congrats, D-Wade, you are officially on my unmitigated list of unmitigated love. I know, you were always deft and hell-raising, but in these Games you played like you wanted to scare people on the way to getting results, and occasionally bask in the terrific afterglow of your own menace. You were pissed that the NBA had forgotten you, pissed about the USA’s need to prove itself, and no longer shackled by domestic partnership. I don’t want to say that your 2006 ring didn’t have a sense of purpose to it, but there’s a huge difference between numb teleology and delighting in each step of the journey."
SLC Dunk: "According to my count, that’s six gold medals for players while with the Jazz (2 each for Stockton and Malone and now 1 for Deron and Boozer). I believe that’s the most for any NBA team. Granted, Boozer didn’t see as much time as the other three, but a gold is still a gold."
Chris Bosh, The FanHouse: "It’s finally over! And we did IT! Man! I’ve been dreaming about this since I first saw The Dream Team earn their medals back in 1992. I was only 8 years old, but I thought it was so cool and I wanted to be just like them. I always watched the Olympics as a little kid and it amazes me that I’m at this point where I am now. This has been the biggest accomplishment of my career so far. It’s such a great feeling because we worked so hard for all of these years and it’s paid off for us. We started this thing in 2006 with dreams of a Gold Medal in Beijing and now we’re to that point. Time flies so fast and I’m definitely going to take in this moment. It seems like it was yesterday when we were at the World Championships getting a Bronze medal. Now we have something better and we can put that behind us."
Dime: "Why Spain lost: Defense. Team USA left the door wide open with some terrible defense in the first half that got only slightly better in the second half, and if Spain had been able to just get a few more stops, they could have been wearing the gold medals. We knew Spain, like every team, would have trouble keeping guys like Wade and Chris Paul and Kobe out of the lane, but leaving U.S. shooters wide open for some big threes in the fourth quarter was the ultimate downfall."
Nothin But BBall: "Dwayne Wade and Kobe, both NBA champions had their most amazing games of the Olympics. Kobe had been quiet throughout the game because of foul trouble … until the 4th quarter. He had his hand in 15 straight points right after a timeout from Coach K. Wade just couldn’t be stopped. 27 points on layups, dunks, and … jumpers? At one point, Wade was 7-7 from the field and didn’t seem like he would ever miss. Without these 2 stars, the gold most likely would have gone to Spain. For those who couldn’t stay awake to watch the game, search every inch of the internet and watch every highlight you can on YouTube."
As you can imagine, the Internets are very alive this morning. More USA gold ‘net reaction on the way …
