A quick look at who’s battling injuries in The Association besides Arenas and Monta Ellis …
Tyson Chandler, toe, via New Orleans Times-Picayune: "… Chandler has been working out at the New Orleans Arena for the past week, but when training camp opens on Saturday he won’t be at 100 percent. Chandler said he is still experiencing some minor soreness in his big toe that kept him from participating as an alternate on the U.S. Olympic basketball team this summer. ‘I’m not at 100 percent, but obviously I feel better because I’ve been able to take a little time off,’ Chandler said. ‘But I have continued to work on my skills, but with not as much movement.’"
Chucky Atkins, knee, via Charlotte Observer: "… Atkins will be out the next six weeks after he had surgery Wednesday on his right knee. The arthroscopic procedure to repair cartilage and clean out loose bodies was performed by Nuggets orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steve Traina. Atkins started having pain in the knee about two weeks ago while playing pick-up games in preparation for the season. An MRI taken Monday revealed the problem and surgery was deemed necessary […] To bolster depth at point guard, Karl said
the Nuggets expect to add former Michigan State star Mateen Cleaves and
possibly former Virginia Tech player Jamon Gordon to the preseason
roster. As for the regular season, which for the
Nuggets starts Oct. 29 at Utah, Karl said he will experiment with the
rotation at lead guard. ‘I think you’ll see me mess around with point-forward and J.R. Smith,’ Karl said." (!!!)
Chris Wilcox, virus, The Oklahoman: "… Wilcox, who started 55 games last season before missing the final 14 games with a sprained right pinkie finger, has been battling what could be a possible virus in recent days while in Houston. When Wilcox spoke with Carlesimo on Wednesday morning, he said he hasn’t been feeling good the last few weeks. ‘We’re anxious to see him,’ Carlesimo said. ‘First, we need to evaluate the finger, which I don’t think will be a concern, and then look at his conditioning. The quicker we get him in condition and 100 percent physically, no question that’s going to be critical.’"
Robert Swift, hand, The Oklahoman: "… Swift recently suffered a broken bone in his right hand and has been unable to fully participate in the team’s voluntary workouts. He is likely to be limited in training camp and the preseason. Swift is entering this season recovering from March surgery to repair a torn meniscus."
Danilo Gallinari, back, New York Daily News: "Although Gallinari doesn’t have a timetable for his return and said he has been limited to only a little bit of shooting, he remains positive about his chances of participating. ‘It’s feeling better, so much better, so I’m real optimistic about being in the training camp,’ Gallinari said. ‘It’s improving in the right way.’ While it was widely believed that Gallinari first injured his back in the Knicks’ first summer-league game back on July 15, the 20-year-old forward disclosed Wednesday that he actually first felt the soreness flare up before that."
Kenyon Martin, beer gut/knees, Denver Post: "Nuggets fans will notice a slim, trim Kenyon Martin this season. The athletic forward has dropped 12 pounds, playing at 228 this time around, he said, from 240 last season. The reason? He pointed at his knees. ‘Take pressure off of these.’"
